This work is an example of the author’s mastery in conveying the idea of the sculpture through the compositional arrangement of the characters. The silhouettes of the comrades united in a joint movement symbolise unity and the singleness of their purpose, creating a cohesive composition of the artwork. The figures mutually complement each other and are depicted in lively and dynamic motion. At the same time, Karmeliuk’s raised head symbolises his confidence and readiness for the struggle. This sculpture has its history, as Bronyslava Skorpuska, a Ukrainian public figure from Philadelphia, commissioned it. The image of Karmeliuk reminded her of her father, who often sang the folk song about the leader of the peasant rebels, “Za Sybirom sontse skhodyt” (“The Sun Rises over Siberia.)”. Later, Mrs Bronislava donated this and three other works to NaUOA.
