A gift of Oleksandr Mykhaliuk and Raisa Maievska, 2012
Without exaggeration, the image of the young shepherd playing the duda is the most lyrical in the collection. The use of white material adds lightness and delicacy to the work. The composition is holistic and complete. In the figure of the young shepherd, Kapshuchenko must have conveyed his childhood memories.
The master loved depicting rural life: “It feels like I live in the city, but my heart is in the fields, in the village. That’s where I see myself, although I understand it’s just a yearning of my soul, or rather cherishing a dream. So, I take clay and lovingly sculpt my youths, lasses, and men. I do it easily and in a somewhat holy, harmonious mood.”(from the book of Fedoruk, O. (2004). Plastyka Petra Kapshuchenka. [Peter Kapshuchenko’s Sculpting Work.] Kyiv; New York: M.P. Kotz Publishers, p. 148.)
