The sculpture “Ukraine-Phoenix-Stork” took part in the competition for the best monument to Ukraine’s Independence and, if it won, could have decorated Maidan in Kyiv. Mirtala turned to the topic of Ukraine after decades of living in emigration, illustrating in her own way in sculptural form the story of revival, liberation, and the desire to live. The locked circle symbolises slavery, and it is broken by a stork (the symbol of Ukraine) in rapid flight, breaking free and reborn from the flames as a mythical phoenix.
